Hey Twitter. Get your shit together! It’s time.
It’s just not a fair game anymore and it’s time they implemented things they promised.
Twitter is a super useful platform that doesn’t know how to monetise yet. I mean for a first time user it might be super confusing (mentions, favs, followers) and of course the infamous blue tick. But those who have been on twitter since 2007 sure knows that this platform needs some serious reforms.
Twitter announced that they would NO LONGER run political ads last week . That’s good. But that just won’t cut it. Twitter you need to be better at handling the people on your platform.
The blue tick conundrum
I used to know @(namehidden) very well. We used to DM on almost all topics on twitter and that was a fun time. Sometime in 2017 when twitter opened up the verification program for the public, she got verified. Then it just went downhill. She was very conscious about what she posted, unfollowed a bunch of people including me, responded only to verified people. I mean what a load of crap?
Giving verification to selected random people is as equal as giving a high profile govt job to an ordinary citizen. They get this rush of power over the others and that can change them for good.
Let’s discuss for a second what the blue tick was intended for. People impersonate other people. Verification makes sense for celebs and high profile business people who’s tweets make an impact. For someone who just wrote one book that sold 10 copies get verified, things start to fall apart twitter. That’s not how you do it. When the public verification was open, I applied too. I’m sure many of you did too. Verification only makes sense if it’s ready to verify everyone who has a valid ID card.
Talking about verified accounts who tweet nonsensical tweets is for another time.
But why the extra privilege for some people?
Twitter has laid down strict rules for verification like a genuine profile picture, should be of public importance etc. But check out some of these accounts:
There is absolutely no way to get a normal account verified as of now as twitter has disabled that option to apply. But here is the catch:
I mean what the hell twitter? So people with contacts and loads of cash can now apply for a verification even when twitter has disabled its verification program? Is there a parallel twitter that works above the public and common people who use it? And the worst thing is, there is no proper reporting. If you flag a verified account for a tweet it just won’t affect the tweet nor the user. We see a lot of verified accounts tweeting hate tweets or indulging in cast discriminations. None of them are affected in anyway whatsoever.
When will twitter get a hold of their platform? When will they take their users seriously? These celebrities didn’t make twitter what it is today, we did. I hope you read this Jack. I really hope you do.
